Signs That May Indicate Hospice Is Right
If someone you love is experiencing any of the following, it may be time to have a conversation about hospice. Select each that applies to receive personalized guidance.
This guide is for informational purposes only and is not a medical evaluation. Only a physician can determine whether someone qualifies for hospice care.
Questions to Ask When Comparing Hospices
You have the right to choose the hospice that will care for your loved one. Tap each question to expand and learn what to listen for.
First impressions reveal culture. A team that rushes your initial call is unlikely to be attentive later. Look for warmth, patience, and willingness to answer every question — no matter how small.
A no-pressure consultation shows the hospice respects your decision-making process. Use it to gauge communication style and determine if this team is the right fit for your family.
Confirm your address is within their service territory. Also ask: do they serve patients in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, or only private homes?
Ask if they can begin services within 24–48 hours if needed. Understand the enrollment process — paperwork, physician certification, and first visit scheduling.
Understand your role as caregiver, including physical or time commitments. Ask how they support the whole family unit — not just the patient — and whether respite care is available.
A full team includes nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers. Ask for a care schedule — frequency of nurse visits is often an indicator of overall quality.
Coordination with your existing physician ensures continuity and avoids conflicting approaches. Ask how they communicate with outside doctors and whether your physician can remain involved.
Ask specifically: who answers after hours — a live nurse or an answering service? How quickly can someone be dispatched? What qualifies as an emergency visit?
Palliative care definitions vary between providers. Ask whether expensive symptom-management therapies — such as IV medications or specialized devices — are covered.
Medicare/Medicaid covers most hospice costs, but ask about medications, equipment, and services that may not be included. Understanding costs upfront avoids unexpected stress.
Flexibility in care settings ensures your loved one can remain in the most comfortable environment. Ask what happens if their care needs change and a different setting becomes necessary.
